Description
Crisis in Tohoun is centred around a fictional colonial crisis between the German colony of Togoland and the French colony of Dahomey (modern Benin). Set in 1896, this semi-rigid game allows players to enter the roles of colonial administrators from France or Germany, as well as the roles of tribal leaders from 3 local groups.
Gameplay
Players are given conflicting objectives of different priority, and they need to attempt to accomplish as many as possible. Objectives are designed to push them to conflict, but they might decide to sacrifice some of the objectives to secure temporary alliances and accomplish aims they prioritise more. The game involves diplomacy through interactions with other players, as well as a turn-based operational-level combat of light-equipped colonial forces. The main feature of the game is the requirement for players to limit their escalation, as going too far would result in their conflict sparking war in Europe – something that their respective Metropoles are not ready for yet.
